Sibling rivalry in black-legged kittiwakes

Vendredi 28 novembre 2008 à 11 heures, amphi Mariotte

Adriana Vallarino présentera ses travaux de thèse, réalisés à l'université de Glasgow.

Sibling rivalry is widely spread through avian species, but siblicide as a consequence of this aggression is not common. Black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) kill their siblings when the amount of food available is scarce. Several asymmetries present within a brood make siblicide possible (e.g. egg components, age and size). In the present talk I will discuss the influence of egg size and egg components on the chicks’ rivalry, social position, stress response and fledging success after experimentally manipulating these asymmetries in the field.
