Research areas

My research activities focus on the study of organic matter dynamics in the environment: transfers from plant to soil/sediments/solution and evolution in a changing environment (natural and anthropogenic changes). This research is based on the characterisation of the organic matter pools and of the transformation processes using specific molecular and isotopic markers.

For this research, I use stable isotope techniques (13C labelling technique) and biomarkers of the organic matter origin and degradation (phenols, lipids, sugars…)

Research interests

My main research interests are in the study of host-parasite interactions, sexual selection and mating systems, and bird population biology.


1)    Host-parasite interactions

This part of my research is divided in two themes:

- Analysing the proximate causes and adaptive consequences of the influence of parasites with complex life cycles on the behaviour and physiology of their hosts: I am particularly combining ecological and physiological approaches to provide a critical assessment of the 'host-manipulation' hypothesis.

2) Sexual selection and mating systems

At the moment, I am concerned with two main research questions:

- Analyzing the patterns of mating and re-mating in a tropical and monogamous bird species, the Zenaida dove, in relation with phenotypic and genetic individual quality.

- Understanding the evolution of sexual dichromatism within the genus Loxigilla.


3) Bird population biology

This part of my research is about the relative influence of genetic and phenotypic individual quality on life-history traits such as adult survival, recruitment, and breeding success in both the Zenaida dove and the Greater Flamingo, Phoenicopterus roseus (in cooperation with the Tour du Valat research center).

My primary education is in landscape planning (I became a Landscape Architect from ETS Lullier-CH in 1991) but my main passion has always been on "wild things", hence I have been working for conservation agencies in France since 1993. In the same time, I continued to study the ecology of extreme environments in Aix-Marseille III university where I got my master degree (DEA "ECAMM") in 1996, developing some mathematical tools to assess the degree of naturalness of some mountain forests. But since my first expedition to Greenland in 1990, part of my life has turned towards the Arctic regions where I returned ever since every summer for several months (Svalbard , Siberia , Arctic Canada, Alaska and mainly NE Greenland). That's where and when my PhD project started, even though I was only officially registered as a PhD student in 1998. All field works are organized with the NGO "GREA" (Arctic Ecology Research Group / Groupe de Recherche en Ecologie Arctique).







Beside the research I'm in charge for the French Nature Reserve Network / Reserves Naturelles de France (conservation and management issues), my main work (for my PhD) investigated the lemming cycle and predator-prey interactions in Greenland. Several recent studies have converged to the conclusion that the periodic rodent oscillations in boreal and arctic regions are essentially maintained by the interactions between the rodents and their mustelid predators. However, before arriving at a definite conclusion for this 100-yr-old puzzle of rodent dynamics, several hypotheses still need to be tested, combining appropriate empirical and theoretical approaches. For this purpose, I adapted the empirically-based models developed by Hanski and co-workers for a simple and well-documented high arctic vertebrate community from northeast Greenland. An ongoing collaborative effort with the universities of Helsinki and Freiburg was initiated in 1998 in order to collect information needed to parameterize the model.


Having documented the numerical and functional responses of the main lemming predators (stoat, Arctic fox, snowy owl and long-tailed skua), we are now able to estimate the summer predation rate for the entire predator guild, according to the lemming density at snowmelt (N' ) and to the current lemming density (N). This predation rate is delayed, in line with the specialist predator hypothesis. These functional and numerical responses were used to parameterize a predator-prey model that predicts a cyclic dynamic of similar amplitudes and cycle lengths as observed in the field (see Figs).

I then investigated the behaviour and sensitivity of this model, especially the climate change related impact on the dynamics (see Science and GCB papers from 2009). The impact of the snowy owl and long-tailed skua predation (preferences for females or specific age classes) on the lemming dynamics will also be tested with this model in the near future.


New Ivory Gull studies in North Greenland...

Beside this long-term research on predator prey dynamics, that will continue on a new study site in NE Greenland (Hochstetter Forland) in 2010-2013, I also initiated a program on ivory gull in 2003, with satellite tracking going on since 2007. This high-Arctic species, currently endangered by the reduction of sea-ice, it's main and almost exclusive habitat, is likely to undergo dramatic changes in the next few years or at most decades. Whether it will completely disappear or adapt to its new environment, this makes it a very interesting species to study.

More recently new topics are developed :

Microbially-induced mineralization is considered as one of the main natural processes controlling CO2 levels in the atmosphere and a major structural and ecological player in the modern and in the past ecosystems. The result of this process is the formation of « biological » microbial deposits. Microbialites (organo-sedimentary structure predominantly accreted by sediment trapping, binding, and/or in situ precipitation as a result of the growth and metabolic activity of microorganisms) are found throughout the geological record and are biosignatures of the early Earth and in the search for extraterrestrial life. The oldest preserved fossil stromatolites in the geological record are about 3.4 billion years old and have been found in Western Australia and Canada. In modern natural systems, biological carbonates precipitation occurs in different forms, fabrics and in different environments (saline lagons, hypersaline, alkaline lakes, freshwater rivers and lakes). The study of mechanisms of microbialite formation at different scales (km until nm) is critical for interpretation and understanding their origin and evaluation. This multi-scale approach concerns: (1) macro-scale  (tectonics, climate); (2) meso-scale (hydrothermal circulation, water chemistry); (2) micro-scale (microbial - mineral interaction, mineralogy/morphology of carbonates). Two fieldworks are chosen: modern (Great Salt Lake, USA and Cuba) and ancient (Precambrian of Gabon in Africa, Trias of Utah in USA and Oligo-MiocenebasinofLimagnes, France) microbialites. The results can help to answer important questions about i) carbonate formations in past (geological context) and present time (biogeochemical cycle and context of CO2 storage); ii) Preservation in the fossil record of mineralization processes.


            A first detailed analysis helped to better constrain the mechanisms of formation of the microbial deposits. Microbialite is the result of mineralization and lithification of a microbial mat under the influence of a metabolic component (intrinsic) related to the activity of the microbial mat first, and environmental (extrinsic) conditions. Although the component related to the metabolic activity of microbial mat is a prerequisite for mineralization, this work focused on the environmental component and the associated controlling factors. Furthermore, the influence of extrinsic factors is often limited in the literature to changes in microbial communities. The aim of this manuscript is to replace microbial deposits in their context of formation. It allows to understand the direct implications of the extrinsic parameters on (1) the processes of mineralization of the microbial mats and formation of microbialites, (2) the morphologies of microbial structures, (3) the distribution and (4) the relationship between microbial mats and microbialite and their environment. While the mineralization potential is generally associated with the intrinsic activity of the microbial mat, the lateral and temporal variations of this potential within a same microbial mat were used to illustrate the influence of extrinsic parameters on mineralization, and therefore on the formation of microbialites. However, a significant mineralization potential does not necessarily mean microbialite formation. The preservation of the mineralization product is necessary for lithifying a microbial mat. The process of lithification is a major driver for the preservation of these microbial structures in the fossil record. Moreover, indirect evidences of microbial activity may also be retained by a geochemical signal.

Research interests

My main research interests are in paleontology and biodiversity focusing on the evolution of rodents in relation to biotic and abiotic factors.

The three main axes of my research are about:

  • Relations between mammalian communities and climate (size and species richness): The observation of the species richness evolution through time allows to construct some transfert functions in order to quantify climatic parameters. In fact, the correlations between species richness and climatic variations indicate that changes in biodiversity can be used to characterize climatic fluctuations. Several models have been proposed : the ones based on murines and arvicolines allow to quantify past climates since the Pliocene, and a third one has been developed to quantify older climates, especially since the Miocene.
  • Relations between shape and climate: Different parameters characterize biodiversity and are available in paleontological studies, as species richness (number of taxa, abundance), size of organisms and shape. These parameters evolve through time, they can be modified and they can thus registered life histories and environmental conditions. The studies of the evolutionary rates of these different parameters in relation to biotic or abiotic factors will express the dynamic of the biodiversity through time. Rodents and especially arvicolines, my animal model, highlight informations on the relationships between morphological variability and climate at a continental scale through Quaernary times. This group is characterised by a great variability of the tooth patterns both at intra-specific or inter-specific scales in relation to geography or environment.
  • Mecanisms acting on the morphological variability (Evo-Devo): With the new methods developed in morphometry, it is now quite easy to characterize the shape but the origin of the morphological variation and the mecanisms leading to a particular shape are still difficult to understand and to explain. My research concerns the application of a new method in morphometry based on the modularity and integration concept. New studies are now considered to better understand the development of organims, and especially the development of the dental row in the case of arvicolines.


I take part to some education proper to the EPHE or to the University of Burgundy. – The research field developed in Dijon corresponds to the Master EPHE EGB (Environment and Gestion of Biodiversity). Two courses are presented : (1) Data base in Natural Sciences and (2) Morphological analysis. – At the University of Burgundy, I take part to education mainly in palaeontology and for CAPES & AGREG degrees. – I also give courses in evolution in continuing education (IUFM) for schoolmaster.

Research interests

 My main research interests are in the evolutionary ecology of host-parasite interactions, focusing on the diversity of parasite's strategies of host exploitation and the consequences on host population biology. The main topics of my studies are about:

  •  Manipulation of host sex ratio. I'm interested in vertically-transmitted parasites (Wolbachia (my former favorite parasite!) , microsporidia) as reproductive parasites of their crustacean hosts, their consequences on host reproductive strategies.

  •  Manipulation of host behaviour. The model organisms are acanthocephalan parasites, infecting freshwater crustacean intermediate hosts. I'm interested in investigating the causes for the variability observed in the manipulation (genetics, environment).

  •  Conflicts between manipulative parasites. How do parasites with different transmission strategies coexist in a single host? Are there conflicts and how are they expressed? What are the consequences for the host? I try to address these questions by studying the above-cited parasites.

  •  The role of biological invasions in evolutionary ecology of host-parasite relationships. The model organisms are the invasive amphipods and their parasites.

  •  More recently, I also began projects on sea urchins and their symbionts:  (1)  to understand the role of ectosymbiosis on benthic biodiversity in Antarctica; (2)  to understand how the life cycle of ectosymbiotic crab is shared between two hosts.

Research interests (1992-2015)

My research activities mainly focus on the study of population differentiation and speciation by the use of morphometric approaches. Initiated during the PhD, and largely developed since 1997 in the UMR Biogéosciences in Dijon, my research is structured around three main axes:

  • Axis 1- Morphometric quantification of the differentiation, links with the pattern of genetical differentiation and with the evolutionary history of the taxa considered.
  • Axis 2- Estimation of the impact of morphological differentiation on speciation by the study of developmental instability of hybrids between differentiating taxa.
  • Axis 3- Study of the mechanisms underlying developmental stability.

Model organisms are currently principally fishes (cichlids) but concerned also insects (carabid beetles, drosophila…), sea urchins (regulars and irregulars) and rodents.

Research interests


My main current interest is in the evolutionary ecology of host-parasite interactions, more specifically in parasitic manipulation. The model organisms are acanthocephalan parasites, infecting freshwater crustacean intermediate hosts and fish or bird final hosts.

I am addressing the evolutionary significance of parasite-induced behavioural alterations with a specific emphasis on changes in anti-predator defenses (such as odour-evoked escape responses, choice of microhabitat). I am also investigating the adaptive value of carotenoid-based pigmentation in some acanthocephalan species.

More recently, I have started exploring the mechanistic basis of parasite manipulation, by focusing on candidate neuromodulatory pathways.

The study of parasite-induced alterations is now addressing the existence of a behavioural syndrome in infected manipulated hosts. Ultimately, this more integrated approach should improve our understanding of the evolution of parasite manipulation and of complex life cycle.

Current research

My research interests focus on host-parasite interactions and ecological immunology using fresh water amphipod crustaceans (e.g. Gammarus sp.) and the yellow mealworm beetles, Tenebrio molitor, as study organisms. Current projects include:


  • Examining the influence of immunosuppressing parasites on the evolution host immune defences in Gammarus sp.
  • Identifying the role of dietary carotenoids on innate immune defences in Gammarus sp.
  • Studying the evolutionary ecology of immune priming within and across generations in the mealworm beetle, Tenebrio molitor.
