Understanding the ecological, evolutionary, and molecular mechanisms underlying morphological diversification is a major challenge in biology. A combination of historical, biological, and technical features make the semi-aquatic bugs (Hemiptera, Gerromorpha) a sustainable model for integrating various approaches to the study of animal diversity. In this presentation, I will detail two examples for appendage diversification. The first investigates how sexual dimorphism can arise from a conflict between the sexes over a shared trait. The second example explores the mechanisms underlying lineage diversification following the conquest of a new ecological habitat.
