Microplastics in the freshwater ecosystem: unveiling the drivers of their spatio-temporal variability and of their ingestion by aquatic organisms

Aline De Carvalho, postdoc at Biogéosciences, will present the 14 december 2021 her previous work on microplkastic in the Garonne river basin.

Abstract

The omnipresence of microplastics, particles smaller than 5mm, in freshwater ecosystems is a major environmental problem and a better understanding of the dynamic of this pollution is crucial. In this study, the spatial and temporal variability in microplastic pollution was quantified in the Garonne catchment. A total of fourteen sites distributed across tributaries and the main river were sampled during four seasons. The environmental drivers of this variability and the impact of Toulouse agglomeration on microplastic pollution were quantified, including during two flood episodes. The consumption of microplastics by macroinvertebrates and fish was also quantified, and its drivers identified using stable isotope analysis aiming to link individual trophic niche to microplastic consumption.
