Abstract
This thesis proposes to reconstruct the seasonality during the different phases of the Antarctic ice-sheet development (EOT and MMCT) in coastal environments from geochemical studies on bivalves shells (sclerochronogeochemistry). For the Eocene-Oligocene Transition (36-32 Ma), the study will focus on selected samples on both sides of North Atlantic Ocean (Isle of Wight, UK and Florida, USA). For the Middle Miocene Climatic Transition (15-12 Ma), the studies will focus on the northern hemisphere with a meridian comparison between Western Europe (Aquitaine and Mediterranean basins) and East American coast (Florida).
The seasonal climatic contrasts will be reconstituted thanks to the stable isotopes of oxygen (δ18O) supplemented by more unequivocal proxies of the temperature (Mg/Ca, Δ47 for example) in order to avoid the fluctuations of the isotopic ratio of the sea water whose variations are potentially important in the coastal environments (salinity and / or glacial effect).
