Male investment in sperm quality – from evolutionary ecology to ecotoxicology

Sperm quality comprises a set of traits, which determine male fertility and hence fitness. Yet, despite strong selective pressures on sperm quality, it exhibits substantial variation at all levels : among males, within males and within ejaculates. In the last years, we have examined some of the factors that participate to maintaining such variation. Using Damaraland mole-rats and house sparrows, we explored how reproductive status and dominance on the one hand and environmental/social stressors and oxidative stress on the other hand affect sperm quality.
