Short and long-term consequences of the early developmental period

Dr Raquel Monclus-Burgoa, Biogéosciences, UMR 6282 CNRS, Université Bourgogne Franche-Comté, EPHE

vendredi 13 décembre 2019, amphithéâtre Monge, 11 heures

Understanding the early developmental period – the period that goes from conception until the animal reaches sexual maturity – is crucial to understand the adult phenotype. Disturbances during this phase of development have long-lasting consequences on the fitness of any individual. Such disturbances can be triggered by abiotic factors, but also by the social environment where an individual develops. During the early stages of life, parents and siblings are the main modifiers. Indeed, parental effects – the non-genetic effects of the parents’ phenotype on the offspring’s phenotype – are strong modulators of early life conditions. I am going to present some of my work in the life-history consequences of the prenatal and postnatal social environment.
