Beyond deep-marine records: exploring shallow-marine counterparts as hydroclimate archives
Romain Vaucher, université de Genève, lundi 13 novembre 2023 à 13 heures en salle 303
Shallow-marine stratigraphic records are often disregarded as climate archives due to their presumed temporal incompleteness. This presentation will explore the Plio-Pleistocene record of the Taiwan Western Foreland Basin and unveil the climate insights embedded in its stratigraphic record. The multidisciplinary approach starts with detailed sedimentology to further investigate hydroclimatic trends in the Northwest Pacific, where tropical cyclones and glacial-interglacial cycles ruled sedimentation. In turn, the journey through the Taiwanese stratigraphic record provides evidence that within specific basin settings, shallow-marine environments offer a more complex narrative of past hydroclimatic dynamics than that found in traditional deep-marine records.
