Resume
Benjamin Bois is an assistant professor (“maître de conference”) at the University of Burgundy, in Dijon, France. He teaches viticulture, GIS, terroir and climatology at the University Institute of Vine and Wine (IUVV – Institut « Jules Guyot »). His research, performed within the Climate Research Center (Biogeosciences lab, University of Burgundy) focuses on climate / viticulture relationships, with a specific interest in the role of climate in the terroir effect.
In 2002, Benjamin was graduated as an Engineer/Master in viticulture from Bordeaux Science Agro College. He has worked in 2002, 2003 and 2004 as a winemaker at Chateau Lagarosse, a 30 ha vineyard in the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation of origin. His curiosity in understanding the Terroir led him to shift from grape production to research. In December 2004, he started a PhD thesis in Bordeaux University concerning the spatial variability of climate within the Bordeaux wine growing region and its impact on grapevine development and grape quality. He defended his thesis in 2007, when he started to work as an assistant professor at the University of Burgundy, another wine growing region where Terroir as a large significance for wine.
Benjamin Bois has been elected president of the Viticulture commission of the International Organization of Vine and Wine in July 2015.
Main research focus
Benjamin’s research focus on causes and consequences of climate variability in viticulture, through three major themes:
–Climate spatial structure at various scale levels.
This research focuses on analyzing the spatial variation of climate within wine growing regions, using gridded climatic data (obtained by means of interpolation or regional models) and to identify the contribution of environmental factors, i.e. landscape and land cover, to this climatic diversity. Agroclimatic indices are used to evaluate the consequences of this climate variability on vineyard management, berry ripening and major grapevine diseases.
– Water availability at local scale.
This research aims at quantifying the contribution of climate to water availability of the vineyard, in cool climates conditions, using Burgundy as a case study. Very high spatial resolution of rainfall and its consequences in plant protection and grape quality are evaluated. On parallel the consequences of soil spatial variations to grapevine water use and grape ripening are assessed, in order to better understand the role of soil and climate to the large diversity of Burgundy Terroirs.
– Climate evolution and viticulture
The Climate Research Center has been using global (ARPEGE-Climat) and regional (Weather Research & Forecasting Model aka WRF) simulations to study climat interactions worldwide (teleconnections). Simulated downscaled data are used to assess to assess the consequences of climate observed and projected variations on environement and society. In particular, climate change consequences to grapevine development and viticulture pests are studied.
Scientific skills
Benjamin is skilled in climate spatial interpolation and spatial analysis of climate. He works with multivariate modelling approaches and geostatistics, mostly though programming with R software and GIS tools. He has also great interest in field measurement (climate sensors and grapevine status measurement devices).
