Major role of water bodies on diurnal precipitation regimes in Eastern Africa

Camberlin, P., Gitau, W., Planchon, O., Dubreuil, V., Funatsu, B. M., & Philippon, N.

International Journal of Climatology, doi:10.1002/joc.5197

Mean diurnal rainfall regimes over eastern Africa are studied based on 3-hourly data from the TRMM 3B42 data set, averaged over 1998-2014. Good consistency is found with in situ data. Over land, a dominant late afternoon maximum is found. However many inland regions show a delayed rainfall maximum (evening, nighttime or morning).  Indirect evidence is found that sea breeze effects can be detected at great distances from the coast. Over the lakes, a morning or late night maximum generally prevails which strongly contrasts with the regime of land areas.
