Standardized rainfall index computed for the period 1950–2002: (a) over the whole Sahel (limits: 20°W–20°E; 10°N–20°N), using the 85-station synoptic network; (b) at the Niamey Airport station. The two phases, wet and dry, appear more clearly on the Sahelian index than on the Niamey index. This is a consequence of the high spatial variability of rainfall regime leading to a single station having a behaviour significantly and randomly different from the regional pattern.
