Unravelling the thread: understanding fitness prospects using an individual-based longitudinal study on a long-lived seabird

A full understanding of the proximate and ultimate mechanisms underlying variability in life-history strategies and trade-offs requires simultaneous assessment of between- and within-individual variation. Only this way, the between-individual process of selective disappearance, as well as within-individual processes of aging and other forms of plasticity can be separated and correctly interpreted, something that is especially important in the current context of a changing environment. Investigations, however, require accurate longitudinal data, which are relatively rare for long-lived species. In this talk, I will present you an individual-based long-term study on the common tern (Sterna hirundo). I will give you an overview of the various research projects my group has developed and present you the details of my specific projects.
