Diversity of senescence patterns across mammals at inter- and intra-specific level: the asset of captive populations for biology conservation research

Across mammals, a large diversity of senescence patterns (i.e. progressive decline of individual performance with increasing age) is observed with huge differences between species, but also between populations and sexes. Using comparative analysis results, I will discuss different factors responsible of the between-species but also between-sexes difference of actuarial senescence patterns in mammals, such as sexual selection intensity, environment of life and species pace of life. I will then focus my presentation on two lemur species (and maybe the tiger too) to describe intra-specific variability of reproductive and actuarial senescence patterns and highlight the usefulness of demographic information from captive individuals, critical to develop sound conservation strategies.
