The ecological consequences of individual differences

Individuals across a large number of species tend to consistently differ in their responses to environmental challenges, such as reaction to a stressful situation, finding food and optimizing collection, competing with conspecifics or dispersing from the natal territory. Such individual differences in behaviour (i.e. animal personality) are often correlated between them and with physiological responses of an individual to a range of stressful situations (i.e. coping style) across time and contexts. Besides ubiquitous in animals their ecological and evolutionary role is still not completely understood. Here I will present already published data demonstrating the existence of consistent behavioural differences in both mammals (Marmota marmota) and insect species (Bombus terrestris). Later I will show unpublished data on an invasive species (Vespa velutina) suggesting the existence of frequency-dependent processes selecting for morphological differences across individuals.
